Disaster officials said that on March 7, "Rescuers were searching for 42 persons still missing" after two landslides caused by severe rains devastated settlements on an island in remote Natuna region, Indonesia

On an isolated island in the Natuna group at the edge of the South China Sea, surrounded by turbulent waters and tall waves, dozens of troops, police officers, and volunteers joined the search. 42 people were reportedly trapped in 27 homes that were covered in tonnes of mud from nearby hills, according to sources.

Despite worries that it would climb, Natuna's disaster agency reduced the death toll on Tuesday morning from 11 to 10. It said on its website that eight injured persons were recovered from the landslides, four of them were in severe condition and had been transported immediately to a hospital in Pontianak city, around 285 kilometres (180 miles) away, on Borneo island.More than 1,200 individuals were displaced by the landslides and transported to shelters and evacuation centres.

Speaking on behalf of the National Disaster Management Agency, Abdul Muhari said that authorities were still gathering data on the total number of fatalities and property damage in the impacted districts.

Two helicopters, a number of vessels, tents, blankets, food, and medical teams, among other supplies, have left Jakarta and nearby islands, according to him.

According to Mr. Muhari, distribution of help has been challenging since the injured and displaced are dispersed and challenging to access, and the search and rescue effort has been impeded by wet weather in the area of the tragedy, downed communications lines, and a shortage of heavy equipment.
