Why The Ozone Layer Is Important ?
The ozone layer is a region of the Earth's upper atmosphere that contains high concentrations of ozone gas. It is located between 6 and 30 miles above the Earth's surface, primarily in the stratosphere. The ozone layer is essential for shielding the planet from the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
Ozone molecules are formed naturally in the atmosphere when UV radiation from the sun strikes oxygen (O2) molecules, splitting them into two individual oxygen atoms. These individual oxygen atoms can then combine with other oxygen molecules to form ozone (O3). The ozone layer absorbs most of the sun's harmful UV radiation, preventing it from reaching the Earth's surface and causing damage to living organisms.
However, since the 1970s, human activities have led to the release of substances called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) into the atmosphere, which have caused a significant depletion of the ozone layer. Aerosol sprays, air conditioning, and refrigeration all often employed CFCs.
When CFCs reach the ozone layer, they break apart as a result of UV radiation, releasing chlorine and bromine atoms. These atoms can then deplete the ozone layer by breaking down ozone molecules.
The depletion of the ozone layer can have serious consequences for living organisms, including an increased risk of skin cancer, eye damage, and harm to marine life. In 1985, an international agreement called the Montreal Protocol was signed to regulate the production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances. As a result of this agreement, the production and consumption of CFCs and other ozone-depleting substances have been greatly reduced, and the ozone layer is slowly recovering.
